These exotic creatures were caught by a trawler off the coast of Castletown Co Cork on May 24th. Up until the 1980's they were regarded as very rare but in the past two decades more and more are being found. "This is the most Northerly point they have ever been caught and the possibility of them becoming a commercial fish for Ireland is welcome news".(Kevin Flannery, Marine Biologist)
These crustaceans which are known as spiny lobsters in the USA are a high cost delacy.
The deep water crayfish repel predators by making a loud rasping noise with their antenne.
There usual habitat is off Senegal in West Africa and parts of the Mediterranean.
We hope to have these on display over the coming weeks - check here for more updates.
